Cognitive-Communication Disorders

Cognitive-communication disorders are communication impairments resulting from underlying cognitive deficits due to neurological impairment.
Cognitive-communication disorders can include impairments in:

    Ability to pay attention
    Memory
    Organization
    Information processing (understanding)
    Problem-solving
    Executive functions (e.g. planning)

Cognitive-communication disorders can cause difficulties in everyday communication – listening, speaking, reading, writing, participating in a conversation, and social interaction. Cognitive-communication disorders are commonly associated with traumatic brain injury but can also occur as a result of other brain injuries such as haemorrhages, stroke, meningitis, encephalitis, anoxia or tumours. Cognitive-communication disorders vary widely between individuals and a therapy program is tailored specifically to the individual in order to retrain skills and compensate for impairments.
